From it’s long established central street plan, Perth increased it’s corner junctions with the introduction of George Street, Scott Street (in phases), connecting with Kinnoull Street, and King Edward Street in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The corners of established and newly formed street junctions attracted prominent, highly decorative buildings in the styles of the day, for functions critical for the commerce of the town, with Banks, Post Offices, Shops, Offices, Hotels and Public Houses claiming these highly sought after locations.
Many of these buildings retained their original functions for long periods, other changed owners and operators more frequently. Buildings that no longer suited their original function or could not offer expanding businesses the space required, needed to be replaced or fell into disrepair. Misfortune fell on others Ian Cameron will take you on a journey through the streets of Perth, celebrating those corner buildings that remain, looking at what happened to those that were altered or lost and what replaced them, up to the present day.
Ian has been Secretary of Perth Civic Trust since 2022 and is involved with the Trust’s blue heritage plaque scheme. He also retains a keen interest in Perth’s built environment after retiring from his post of Property Manager - Architecture, Engineering and Energy with Perth & Kinross Council in 2015 after 38 years, where he was involved in a range of projects - Drumhar Health Centre, housing refurbishment, new build and sheltered housing, office conversions, moves and fit outs, the Fergusson Gallery, A.K. Bell Library, school extensions, and new build schools.
Perth Civic Trust’s AGM (members only) will precede the above talk at 19.00.
