As the headquarters for the 51st (Highland) Division and a major railway hub the city of Perth played an important part in the Great War. The city was a major recruiting and administrative centre as well as supplying materials to the war effort. This talk will guide you through the city looking at the roles of some of the surviving (and some of the missing) landmarks of 1914-18. Michael Taylor is a retired museum curator who spent much of his career here at Perth Museum and Art Gallery. Following his early retirement from Perth and Kinross Council he worked for Museums and Galleries Scotland in Edinburgh for six years. He now works on a freelance basis and is a frequent speaker on First World War topics. Michael is a Fellow of the Museums Association, a member of the Society for Army Historical Research and of the Douglas Haig Fellowship. His original degree in Geology has been supplemented by an MA in British First World War Studies at the University of Birmingham and in 2017 he completed a doctoral study of the 119th Infantry Brigade in the First World War since published as “No Bad Soldiers”.
