This talk seeks to explain when and why Oliver Cromwell invaded Scotland, the importance of Perth in the events surrounding that campaign, and the nature of English occupation that followed until the restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660. Cromwell’s role at the time, as well as that of King Charles II and the Scots, will be examined, and common misunderstandings from both the English and Scottish sides hopefully clarified. This talk is the Fourth Annual Rhoda Fothergill Memorial Lecture, marking the significant contribution made by Rhoda Fothergill to Perth’s cultural and historical life. It is free to attend and is delivered in partnership between The Friends of Perth & Kinross Archive, Perth Civic Trust and Perthshire Society of Natural Sciences. Speaker Biography: Norah Carlin was born and raised in Edinburgh and went on to study history at Oxford University. She taught the subject at Middlesex University and its predecessor institutions for over 30 years, but returned after retirement to Edinburgh, where she has undertaken independent research mainly in Scottish history. What Petitioners wanted, September 1648 to February 1649 (Breviary Stuff Publications, 2020) as well as several articles on this period.
