Shostakovich Festive Overture
Liszt Piano Concerto No. 2
(Soloist: Alastair Edmonstone)
Beethoven Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral)
Californian-based pianist Dr Alastair Edmonstone returns to his home town of Perth to treat us to a performance of Liszt's sublime second piano concerto, its melodies rolling like waves, its stirring passion and its haunting cello-piano duet. The mood turns (mostly) soothing for the second half of the concert – with the exception of the agitated thunderstorm.
Needing little introduction, The Pastoral Symphony, in Beethoven's 'calm key' of F major, is the most joyous of his symphonies, evoking the sounds of the countryside, where the composer could throw off his black moods and feel at peace; and those of the country folk as they met, worked, played and gave thanks: simple people, whom Beethoven valued far above the aristocrats of Vienna.
