For Women's History Month, Gill Ryan will introduce us to some notable women from Perthshire and speak on the value of libraries and archives to prove women's notability. The talk will showcase some of the women whose Wikipedia articles have been created or improved as a result of the Perth Women on Wikipedia project. Their achievements cover areas such as the Arts, Suffrage, At War, Entertainment and Sports. Looking at pairs of women with these themes in common, the contrasts in their backgrounds, outlook, historical period or recognition make for interesting comparisons.
Biography
Gill runs the Perth Women on Wikipedia project, which carries out research on women of note with a connection to Perth and Kinross or historic Perthshire with the intention of improving or creating a Wikipedia article about them. In partnership with Culture Perth and Kinross, she has facilitated workshops that introduce new and experienced Wikipedia editors to using the library and archives to research gaps in history when it comes to women. The talk will showcase some of the women whose Wikipedia articles have been created or improved as a result of this research.
